August 16 1999 Kristen Wasemiller and Gulliver Win NAYRC Gold
The final
day of the 1999 North American Young Riders' Championships in Wadsworth,
Illinois had clear blue skies with the sun shining on Kristin Wasemiller
of Oklahoma City, OK. Riding her Dutch Warmblood, Gulliver by Taxateur,
the stallion who won Young Riders with Chelsea Sibley in 1993, Wasemillar
scored a 67.95%, just slightly ahead of Gwen Poulin and Fuerst Paldi with
a 67.53%. The bronze went to Nicole Perry on the Hannoverian Stallion
Batido (by Bolero) whose tie score with Poulin was broken by the judges'
decision. Trained by her mother Dede Wasemiller, Kristen warmed up for her test in the cool calm manner she has come to be known for. "I'm a nervous wreck," Dede admitted, "I'm glad there is one of us who is calm! Whatever the outcome I am so proud of her and our horse." Kristen and Gulliver also won the coveted Fiona Baan Memorial Trophy as the high scoring dressage rider of the weekend, and a team gold medal in the Finish Line Team Challenge, the division for physically challenged riders paired with NAYRC competitiors who volunteered to compete. The Captain Andrew B. de Szinay Sportmanship Award went to Ryan Hites, last year's bronze medallist who tragically lost his horse Staatsman Wednesday night from a severe case of colic.
