Gina Smith, Canadian Eastern Grand Prix Champion

Gina Smith and Fledermaus Gina Smith and Fledermaus won the Grand Prix Champion title on the final day of equestrian competition in the eastern division of the Canadian National Dressage Championships held in Blainville, Quebec, the first week of September.

Smith, a professional dressage rider living in Brockville, Ontario, already claimed the same title in 1997. While last year she had to pass on that prominent position to Lee Tubman, this year she grabbed the opportunity to make a decent come back.

With Fledermaus, a 12 year old Dutch warmblood by Purioso, Smith won the Grand Prix and Special with 61.67% and 65.67%. At the end of the show she added a victory in the freestyle class (67.72%), forcing Nancy MacLachlan and the Hanoverian Davis Cup to a Reserve Champion position. Evi Strasser from St. Adele, Quebec, became advanced champion (PSG-Inter I level) with the chestnut mount Justin Tyme.

Even though Smith turned out to be the Ruling Champion of the East, the Canadian Grand Championship Title will be awarded to Liz Hopps and Elymas. At the national competition of the pacific division Hopps gathered an overall average of 130.1 points, while Smith collected a 127.48 total.
