Julia-Katharina von Platen and Mocca

von Platen and Mocca On the sound of the rippling Rhine and surrounded by a gorgeous three park, Julia Katharina von Platen gathered high scores which crowned her Junior Riders' Grand Champion of the Parkfestival Dressur in Bad Honnef, Germany, early July 1999.

Helped by the 10 year old Mocca, Julia Katharina received 66.83% and 68.63% of the judges' panel setting a small difference with second placed Nikolas Kroncke. This great achievement automatically opened the opportunity to function as prima donna of the German Junior Riders' Team, which had to defend its golden number 1 position at the European Championships in Achleiten, Austria, late August.

After capturing individual silver at last year's EUJRC with the Westphalian Welfenprinz, this year Von Platen had set her mind on gold. With Mocca, an exceptionally well trained Hanoverian gelding by Merlino, she enhanced this chance but destiny chose otherwise. One week before departing to castle Achleiten Mocca injured himself, a misfortune which forced Von Platen to cancel her entry for her last European Junior Rider Championships. Desiree Schurf filled in the open position with the chestnut Maldini.
