Fundraiser for Darren Chiacchia Raises over $200,000 Windfall Brings Robert Dover Out of Retirement A musical freestyle was made for the event by Marlene Whittaker. There was not a dry eye in the crowd as Dover rode to the songs “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, and “That’s What Friends Are For.” In appreciation for Robert Dover's ride, an anonymous donor pledged to match funds if $100,000 was raised, and the event exceeded that amount. Dover addressed the crowd with thanks on behalf of The Equestrian Aid Foundation. "We must not forget that, though we all hope the worst is over, this fight has just begun! Darren and his family have a very long road ahead of them which will surely see many ups and downs, but we all have the opportunity to show our love and support by taking away at least one of the greatest points of stress they are encountering- the huge financial burden. This is going to require our entire community looking into their hearts and reaching deep into their pockets to help Darren and his family make it through their time of need." A live band volunteered its services for the event along with several other businesses from Tallahassee. Food was provided by local restaurants, a silent auction was held and several people from all over the world sent checks. DressageDaily's Mary Phelps bid on the sought after week long stay at the Ballynahinch Estate in Connemara, Ireland donated by Guy and Bridgitte McKensie. "My mother has always wanted to visit Ireland, the home country of her family. This will make a perfect birthday present for her 80th next year!" |
